Do Different Liquids Produce Different Levels Of Urine Science Fair Projects

Students have many options when it comes to the development of their science fair projects. If students are interested in medicine or biology then this project is a great option. It will examine how different types of liquids are processed by the body.


The hypothesis for this science fair project is that sugary liquids produce less urine then salty liquids do. The dependent variable in this hypothesis is the amount of urine produced and the independent variable in this hypothesis is the type of liquid that is drunk.

Supplies Needed

This science fair project will need several key pieces of equipment. First of all the student will need at least six to twelve test subjects that are generally healthy. The student will then need a urine collection and measuring device for each of their test subjects. These can be picked up at a medical supply company. The students will also need collection sheets which will be handed out to each test subject. Latex gloves can also be used when collecting urine volume samples.

The Experiment

To start with the student will need to conduct a control experiment. This will create a baseline of data to compare test results to. The control experiment will basically see how much urine is normally produced by each test subject on a daily basis. To collect this data each test subject will be given a urine volume collection container that fits into their toilet. They will then write down the volume of urine that they eliminate from their bodies on a daily basis over a week.

The test experiment will begin by dividing test subjects into two groups. Group A will be given sugary drinks and Group B will be given salty drinks. Each group will be assigned the same volume of liquid. The test subjects will be instructed not to drink anything other than their experiment liquids during the day. They will then monitor their urine output during test day 1, 2 and 3. The groups will then be given the other liquid type and the will be tested for another three days.

Data Analysis

The analysis of the data will involve several steps. First of all the students will need to organize the data by finding the average urine output for each test subject in the control experiment. This will create the baseline data. Next the average urine volume output for each test subject will be calculated for the sugary drink test. Finally the average urine volume output for each test subject will be calculated for the salty drink test. The results will be compared. Students will need to look for trends that indicate that the sugary drinks lead to a higher urine output change compared to the control than the salty drinks did to prove the hypothesis could be true. Otherwise the hypothesis is false.

Cbse India Introduces A Common Syllabus For Maths & Science!

The Union Ministry of Human Resource and CBSE India are leaving no stone unturned to make lives easy for school students across the various boards in India! The latest stride towards this endeavor is the introduction of a common syllabus for Maths and Science for the students of classes XI and XII across all the educational boards. Therefore, from the academic year starting 2011-12, students from all the boards in the country can look forward to a uniform syllabus!

An initiative like this by CBSE India will ensure a level playing field for all the students while they prepare for their engineering and medical entrance examinations. Hence, while all you students studying in classes XI & XII, preparing for your national level engineering and medical entrance exams from the year 2012, need no longer worry about the extensive syllabi covered by your friend in CBSE or other national/ state board.

A common syllabus is just the first step by the Human Resource Ministry and CBSE India towards a flexible pattern of education that is comparable to the education systems existing in the West. CBSE India also has plans in the pipeline to conduct a common entrance exam for Medical and Engineering courses in India by 2013. If such a plan by CBSE India gains acceptance from all the academic corners in the country, life after class XII is only set to get easier for students.

However, implementation of a common syllabus by CBSE India has also garnered a lot of criticism by NCERT. NCERT is of the view that Council of School Board of Education (COBSE) has no right to push the common syllabus agenda. NCERT believes that the decision to undertake any curriculum revision exercise should rightfully rest with itself as NCERT has been instrumental in all such changes over the past years. It also believes that COBSE is just a coordinating body between the various school boards in the country.

Amidst all this controversy, major stakes are now on successful implementation of this common syllabus scheme for Maths and Science. Success of a common syllabus like this could also spread cheer in the lives of students studying in the Commerce and Humanities streams. Talks are around for a uniform syllabus for various subjects in these streams as well. What more could have students asked for to ensure a smooth and stress-free studying experience!

How To Design A Triboard For A Science Experiment

One of the last things that a student does when working on a science fair entry is to create their display board. While many students rely on a simple 2 dimensional piece of poster board for their display board, others go the extra mile by using a triboard for their display piece. A triboard is a great option as it is designed to stand up on its own and it offers three large panels that students can use to display information about their science experiment.

What Is a Triboard?

A triboard is basically a foam board that has been precut and reinforced so that it has two joints. The two joints segment the board into three panels. The two outer panels can be positioned so that the entire triboard stands up on a table or desk without external support. Triboards are sold in art supply, craft and office supply stores. They generally come in white and black, and occasionally they can be found in designer colors like blue or neon colors.

Panel #1 The Introduction to Your Project

The first panel of your triboard needs to be dedicated to introducing your science experiment. It will identify the hypothesis that you selected, the reason why this topic is important and it will explain how your experiment was set up. The graphic elements that this panel will contain will focus on the materials used in your experiment and the experiment set-up.

Panel #2 The Experiment

The second panel will focus on the experiment and the collection of data. This panel will have the most graphic elements. The graphics that it will need include charts, graphs and photographs. Each graphic element will need to be labeled. In addition to the graphic elements, text elements will also need to be posted on the middle panel. First of al the title of the experiment will be found on the second panel. You will also want to add text panels that describe the data that was collected.

Panel #3 Conclusions

The final panel will summarize your findings and talk about the conclusions that you have drawn. This panel will have the least amount of graphics. It will instead have bullet points that explain your results and that also explain how the data either supports or negates your hypothesis. The final panel can also include a list of questions that still need to be answered or research you think still needs to be done on your topic.
